An Interview With Carolina Theatre at Belk Place’s Sara Rae

In her decade at the Foundation, Sara Rae has worn a lot of hats. Lately, however, the hat she wears the most is her hard hat.

Sara, FFTC’s assistant vice president of facility operations, has worked on the Carolina Theatre at Belk Place team since 2020. She started during the pandemic and helped shepherd the project through all the construction challenges that went with it. When restoring an almost 100-year-old theatre, it helps to have someone like Sara bring continuity and clarity.

What first drew you to the Carolina Theatre?

SARA: The attention to detail of the construction and finishes being incorporated into the interior was the initial draw to this project.

What have you loved the most about working on the restoration?

SARA: I’ve loved witnessing the weekly changes on the interior and exterior. The time and love that has gone into this restoration has been incredible to witness, and I’m looking forward to sharing it with everyone.

What are you most excited to share with the community?

SARA: I cannot wait for our audiences to experience the unique programming ideas we plan to bring to our community!

We noticed the sidewalk was recently restored out in front of the building. What’s next?

SARA: We have a lot of exciting things happening on the interior of the building and are working to install lobby flooring, seating and our technology package.

One last question: Who is your dream “get” for the new theatre?

SARA: My dream get would be Bob Seger. I grew up in Detroit listening to his music with my dad, and I would love to experience a performance again!
